The Announcement of Vancouver as a Cultural Capital of Canada 2011
Vancouver, British Columbia
November 12, 2010 CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY Mr. Robinson, Ladies and gentlemen, I am pleased to be here with you today for this important announcement. As a modern, multicultural, and dynamic city, Vancouver truly has its feet firmly planted in this day and age. By hosting the 2010 Winter Games, it kicked off a new era with a bang and acquired an international reputation that is the envy of many other cities. Today, I have the honour of announcing that the city of Vancouver, for the second time in its history, is being bestowed with the prestigious title of Cultural Capital for the year 2011. Two other cities will also receive this honour. One is Lévis, in Quebec, and the other is Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Congratulations to these communities! Whether it is through the beauty of its breathtaking landscapes or its multifaceted cultural image, Vancouver knows how to shine. Its willingness to highlight its multicultural character through arts and culture makes Vancouver a solid candidate to receive the title of Cultural Capital of Canada. Mr. Mayor, your city's commitment to supporting arts and culture is undeniable. The diversity and quality of the activities you are proposing, as well as your accomplishments, clearly demonstrate this. Vancouver could receive up to $1.75 million. This amount comes just in time to launch the celebrations for the 125th anniversary of the city's founding on April 6, 2011. The city is planning a series of interesting activities, including:
I commend the efforts of all the Vancouver residents who put forth the city as a candidate. You can be proud of your contribution to Vancouver's enviable reputation as a city of culture. Bravo! |
