Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Occasion of the 2010 Governor General's Performing Arts Awards
OTTAWA, May 1, 2010 - Canadian arts and culture are a celebration of the richness and diversity of our heritage; they reflect the contributions of artists from across Canada, and from all origins, over many generations. Today, Canadian arts and culture are appreciated by audiences across the country and around the world. Each year, the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards recognize the remarkable contributions of artists working in Canadian theatre, dance, classical and popular music, film, and broadcasting. The Governor General's Performing Arts Awards were created in 1992 by the Right Honourable Ramon John Hnatyshyn (1934-2002), then Governor General of Canada. I would like to congratulate Bryan Adams, Françoise Faucher, Walter Homburger, Édouard Lock, Robin Phillips, and Buffy Sainte-Marie on being awarded this accolade for excellence in the performing arts. In addition, Mohammed and Yulanda Faris will receive the Ramon John Hnatyshyn Award for Voluntarism in the Performing Arts, and Yannick Nézet-Séguin will receive the National Arts Centre Award. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to thank the Governor General's Performing Arts Awards Foundation and the National Arts Centre for this tribute to great Canadian performing artists. Congratulations to all the recipients!
