Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on the Death of Betty Fox
OTTAWA - It was with great sadness that Canadians learned of the death today of Betty Fox. Mrs. Fox was a pillar of support for her son Terry on his cross-Canada run to raise money for cancer research in 1980. After Terry succumbed to the disease in 1981, Betty continued the spirit of Terry's fight against cancer by helping create the annual Terry Fox Run, which is now held in countries around the world and continues to raise millions of dollars in cancer research funding. In the 30 years since the historic Marathon of Hope, Betty Fox worked tirelessly to protect her son's legacy and help fulfill his dream of finding a cure for cancer. At the opening ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games, she was one of the eminent Canadians chosen to carry the Olympic flag into the stadium. She and her husband Rolly Fox would later be part of the lighting of the flame to open the Paralympic Games. On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I would like to offer my deepest condolences to the family and friends of Betty Fox.
