Statement by the Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, on International Dance Day
OTTAWA, April 29, 2010 - Throughout the country, the great names in dance and up-and-coming dancers practise their art with passion and offer Canadians works that are inspiring and enriching.

Our Government supports the arts and culture in Canada. We know how important their development is to our society, our identity, and our economy. This is why we support training for artists under the Canada Arts Training Fund.

For close to 30 years, April 29 has marked International Dance Day. By celebrating this day, the International Dance Committee of UNESCO's International Theatre Institute seeks to raise public interest in all the various forms of dance, including classical and contemporary. In this way, artists throughout the world can use a universal language to express themselves and captivate audiences with their unique performances.

On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the Government of Canada, I commend the dancers, dance enthusiasts, schools, dance troupes, and organizations throughout the country that are dedicated to this extraordinary art form. I invite all Canadians to enjoy the best of what the Canadian dance community has to offer.
