Minister Moore Congratulates French Immersion Students
COQUITLAM, British Columbia, May 29, 2009 – The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today congratulated French immersion students at Dr. Charles Best Secondary School who received awards for excellence in courses offered in French. Students in Grade 12 and Grade 5 exchanged congratulatory gifts and encouragement cards to highlight the achievements and aspirations of both age groups. “Today’s ceremony demonstrates how far our country has come in providing access to French immersion education,” said Minister Moore. “As a French immersion graduate, I congratulate all of you on your efforts to learn a second language. Your ability to speak both of our country’s official languages will ensure a promising future.” The ceremony was organized by Canadian Parents for French, whose main goal is to provide educational opportunities for students to learn and use French as a second language. The organization promotes and encourages linguistic duality by creating links between parents, students, partners in education, government representatives at all levels, and the business community. “Our Government is proud to work in partnership with Canadian Parents for French, and we commend them on their longstanding dedication to our young people and our country’s linguistic duality,” added Minister Moore. Funding for Canadian Parents for French is provided through the Roadmap for Canada’s Linguistic Duality 2008–2013: Acting for the Future. The Roadmap puts into action the Government of Canada’s commitment to promote linguistic duality and support the development of Anglophone and Francophone minority communities for the benefit of all Canadians. This unprecedented government-wide investment of $1.1 billion was made possible thanks to the Government’s clear leadership and a continuous dialogue with the provinces and territories, official-language minority communities, and all Canadians.
