Minister Moore Announces 2010 Canada Day Poster Challenge Winner
BURNABY, British Columbia, May 20, 2010 - The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced that Annie Yu of Burnaby, British Columbia, age 14, is the national winner of the 2010 Canada Day Poster Challenge, which took place under the theme "My Canada is..." "Congratulations to national winner Annie Yu, as well as all the provincial and territorial finalists who illustrated what Canada symbolizes for them," said Minister Moore. "I salute all the young people across the country who helped make such a success of this year's Poster Challenge, which attracted more than 10,000 participants from across Canada. What great talent we have in this country!" Asked to explain her drawing, Annie said, "In my eyes, Canada is the light of our future. No matter what direction or angle you look at, no matter what time in your perspective; to me, Canada can always show its inner beauty." Annie's grand prize is a laptop computer complete with software and a carrying case. Her work will become the official poster for Canada Day and Celebrate Canada. The British Columbia finalist was chosen from among the four winners in the following age groups: - 5 to 8 years: Noelle Yau, age 6, Howard De Beck Elementary, Richmond
- 9 to 11 years: Mary Mao, age 11, Walton Elementary School, Coquitlam
- 12 to 14 years: Annie Yu, age 14, Burnaby North Secondary, Burnaby
- 15 to 18 years: Sammi Xia Wu, age 15, Burnaby North Secondary, Burnaby
The Poster Challenge is a very popular program that, every year, invites Canadians aged 5 to 18 to visually express what inspires them about their country. The theme for this year, "My Canada is..." allowed participants to express their enthusiasm and pride in Canada. The works of all 13 provincial and territorial finalists can be admired at www.posterchallenge.pch.gc.ca.
