Government of Canada Announces Funding for Canada Place Roof Replacement
Stimulus funding will create jobs, stimulate regional economy

Vancouver, British Columbia, November 28, 2009 – The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages and the Member of Parliament for Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam, along with Mike Shardlow, President and CEO, Canada Place Corporation, today announced that the Government of Canada will set aside $21 million toward replacing the roof at the iconic Canada Place, located on Vancouver’s waterfront.

“Under the leadership of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, our Government is focused on creating jobs and stimulating the economy,” said Minister Moore. “By investing in the Canada Place roof, we are creating local jobs and ensuring that this building remains a world-recognized Canadian landmark for decades to come.”

“This is an important investment in a Canadian icon,” said Mr. Shardlow. “Canada Place’s ongoing financial and national contributions are particularly critical at this time, supporting the economy and representing Canada on the West Coast.”

The tensioned fabric roof of Canada Place is due for replacement. The outer roof fabric will be replaced with material of current technology. This investment will ensure that Canada Place remains both a hub of economic activity for Vancouver, and a symbol of national pride.

Funding for today’s announcement comes from the federal $4-billion Infrastructure Stimulus Fund—a key component of Canada’s Economic Action Plan. The Fund invests in construction-ready infrastructure rehabilitation projects that will reach completion by March 2011.

Federal funding is conditional on the project meeting all the requirements of the Infrastructure Stimulus Fund and the signing of a contribution agreement with Canada Place.
