Launch of Spirit of BC Week
Coquitlam, British Columbia
February 7, 2009 CHECK AGAINST DELIVERY I am pleased to be back in my riding of Port Coquitlam for this launch of the 2009 Spirit of BC Week. This week of activities always brings out the best in us British Columbians, as we celebrate our pride in our province and our communities, and come together to strengthen them through sport and recreation, healthy living, arts and culture, literacy, and volunteerism. And this year is made all the more exciting by the fact that the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are a little over a year away. The countdown has already begun. The facilities are ready - on time and on budget. Our athletes are getting ready to bring home gold and make us all very proud. The Government of Canada is a proud partner in planning for 2010. We have invested more than 650 million dollars in the Games, and we continue to work closely with the Province of British Columbia, VANOC, and our other partners. We view these Games as an opportunity to promote health and fitness and to build a legacy that will benefit Canadians for years to come. The venues we have built will live on long after the Games, and both athletes and local residents will be able to use them for sports and other recreational activities. The Games also give us the opportunity to show the entire world our successes and innovations. In every part of the country, Canadians will derive lasting environmental, social, cultural and economic benefits. The Games will also provide an opportunity to promote British Columbia and the talent, energy, and hard work of British Columbians. They offer countless opportunities for local businesses, artists, and volunteers of all kinds. Excitement and anticipation for a truly Canadian Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games are growing, and I am looking forward to cheering on our athletes as they shine during what will truly be Canada’s Games. The Games will unite all Canadians by celebrating our passion for sport, sharing our pride in our many and varied cultures, and highlighting our creative spirit. Many thanks to all the Spirit of BC committees across the province for highlighting the 2010 Winter and Paralympic Games in this year’s celebrations. Best wishes for a fun-filled, successful Spirit of BC week! |
