Coquitlam, BC, February 1, 2010 — The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages and Member of Parliament for Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam, today announced federal support for the Coquitlam Public Library under the Government of Canada’s New Horizons for Seniors Program.
Minister Moore made the announcement on behalf of the Honourable Diane Finley, Minister of Human Resources and Skills Development, and the Honourable Diane Ablonzcy, Minister of State (Seniors).
The Coquitlam Public Library will receive $14,800 for its
Where we were, Where we are − a History of Coquitlam book project. Participating local seniors will produce a book on the history of Coquitlam for readers in grades 6 to 8.
“Seniors are valuable members of society. They contribute a diversity of skills, knowledge and experience to our community,” said Moore. Our Government is proud to support local projects that enable seniors to contribute to their communities through social participation and active living.”
"We are very pleased to be part of a group which will help seniors, students and the general public to learn more about their community's history. This book will fill a gap in our knowledge base and will offer seniors a chance to tell and record the stories of our past," said Silvana Harwood, Deputy Director of the Coquitlam Public Library.
The investment highlighted today falls under the Community Participation and Leadership component of the New Horizons for Seniors Program, which encourages seniors to continue to play an important role in their communities by helping those in need, providing leadership, and sharing their knowledge and skills with others.
With two additional components of the New Horizons for Seniors Program—Capital Assistance and Elder Abuse Awareness—the overall budget of the Program is now $35 million per year.
Since its beginning, the New Horizons for Seniors Program has funded over 5,500 projects in hundreds of communities across Canada. For more information about the Program, please visit
