Government of Canada Invests in Sportsfield Complex in City of Coquitlam
City of Coquitlam, British Columbia – The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, and Member of Parliament (Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam), on behalf of the Honourable Lynne Yelich, Minister of State for Western Economic Diversification, announced today federal funding to strengthen economic opportunities in the City of Coquitlam. Funding for this investment is being provided under the Recreational Infrastructure Canada (RInC) program, a major job creating investment from Canada’s Economic Action Plan.

“At the heart of the Tri-Cities, Percy Perry Stadium is widely used and universally loved by those who use the facility” said Minister Moore. “This track replacement is needed, and I know my constituents will welcome this important investment.”

The Government of Canada is investing $713,130 to ensure that Percy Perry Stadium is able to replace the site roof and the eight-lane sport track. Percy Perry Stadium is a multi-purpose, fully lit stadium built for the 1991 B.C. Summer Games, as part of the district's 100th anniversary. This state of the art facility can host a variety of track events including long jump/triple jump, high jump, pole vault, discus, hammer, shot put, and javelin. This funding will ensure the Centre is able to serve the community for years to come.

“We are thankful to the Federal Government for this opportunity to move ahead with this project,” said City of Coquitlam Mayor, Richard Stewart. “The roof and track replacement at Percy Perry Stadium enhance the newly expanded Town Centre Sport Complex as a first-class sports facility for our community and to attract world-class competitions and events.”

Under RInC, the Conservative Government will provide up to one-third of total eligible costs, with a maximum project contribution of $1 million toward projects that will be completed by March 31, 2011.

The initial funding allocation under RInC for the West is almost $54 million.  Projects will be selected on the basis of merit and construction readiness.

RInC is part of Canada’s Economic Action Plan, the Government of Canada’s multi-faceted stimulus plan that will ensure a quick recovery from the current economic downturn. Western Economic Diversification Canada is delivering the initiative in the four western provinces.
