Government of Canada Announces Canada’s Olympic Ambassador
VANCOUVER, January 15, 2009 – The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages, today announced that the Honourable Nancy Greene Raine, Senator (Thompson–Okanagan–Kootenay), will be Canada’s Olympic Ambassador for the 2010 Olympic Winter Games.

Given Senator Greene Raine’s commitment to sport, Olympic ideals, and Canada, the Prime Minister of Canada has asked her to act in a symbolic role as Canada’s Olympic Ambassador. She will engage Canadians and international audiences throughout the 2010 Winter Games.

“On behalf of Prime Minister Stephen Harper, I am pleased to announce Senator Nancy Greene Raine, a truly exceptional Canadian Olympian, as our Olympic Ambassador,” said Minister Moore. “I have no doubt that she will serve as a tremendous source of inspiration for our athletes during their quest for gold in Vancouver.”

As Canada’s Olympic Ambassador, Senator Greene Raine will contribute to ensuring federal presence throughout the 2010 Winter Games, including participating in Torch Relay celebrations and events at the Canada Pavilion, and will cheer on our athletes in Whistler, where the Government of Canada will showcase athletic and cultural excellence.

“I am delighted to be Canada’s Olympic Ambassador during the upcoming Games,” said Senator Greene Raine. “I know our athletes are well prepared and will be going for the podium. It will be a pleasure to support our athletes by showing them the pride that Canadians share in their achievements.”

Senator Greene Raine won gold and silver medals in alpine skiing at the 1968 Grenoble Winter Olympic Games and World Cup titles in 1967 and 1968. Her total of 14 World Cup victories, including the Olympic Games, is still a Canadian record.

The Government of Canada is a major and committed funding partner in delivering successful Winter Games in 2010 and is striving to maximize Canadians’ investment in the Games. The Games will unite all Canadians by celebrating our passion for sport, sharing our pride in our athletes and our many and varied cultures, and showcasing our talents to the world.
