Government of Canada Invests in the Port Moody Heritage Society
PORT MOODY - The Honourable James Moore, Minister of Canadian Heritage and Official Languages and Member of Parliament (Port Moody-Westwood-Port Coquitlam), today announced funding for the Port Moody Heritage Society.

This funding will help the Society present the 9th annual Ioco Ghost Town Days Festival in Port Moody. The Festival, which runs from September 26 to October 3, 2010, will celebrate people and events from the past while including historical reenactments by 28 local musicians, artisans, and heritage performers.

"Our Government supports festivals that celebrate our country's rich cultural heritage," said Minister Moore. "We are proud to partner with community organizations like the Port Moody Heritage Society to commemorate important historical events, which contribute so greatly to the local economy and the community's cultural vitality."

"We are grateful to Canadian Heritage for supporting our 9th annual Ioco Ghost Town Days Festival," said Wayne Beggs, President of the Port Moody Heritage Society. "These funds help create a fun and engaging heritage event that celebrates the past heritage and traditions of Ioco town while supporting local performers, artisans, and vendors. We look forward to another spirited event where generations come together to celebrate and leave with a better understanding of the history of our community and the value of considering and preserving its heritage."

The Port Moody Heritage Society is a local incorporated non-profit organization that promotes interest in the history of Port Moody through exhibits, programs, and events.

The Government of Canada has provided funding of $3,700 through the Building Communities Through Arts and Heritage program of the Department of Canadian Heritage. This program provides Canadians with more opportunities to take part in activities that present local arts and culture and celebrate local history and heritage.
